Council Seeks Public Input on £6.1m Carnfunnock Country Park Major Revamp

by | Jan 15, 2024

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is calling on the Larne community to actively participate in a public consultation regarding the £6.1 million refurbishment of Carnfunnock Country Park. Located just outside Larne on the scenic Coast Road, the 191-acre park is poised for a significant transformation, funded by the UK Levelling Up Fund.

The redevelopment process has commenced with the submission of a Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) to the Planning Department, marking the beginning of the pre-planning stage.

The Council is eager to engage with local residents and visitors to gather their insights on the proposed changes at Carnfunnock Country Park. Starting the week of January 15, 2024, detailed information about the consultation process, along with a survey link and key documents, will be available on the Levelling Up Carnfunnock webpage.

Additionally, from the same date, the public can view the proposals on-site at Carnfunnock Country Park.

Informed by the feedback received through the public consultation, a comprehensive planning application for the project is currently being prepared.

The innovative plans for Carnfunnock aim to elevate its natural heritage, which is expected to revitalise Larne and the surrounding areas by creating an appealing destination for repeat visits.

Highlights of the project include the construction of a new visitor centre, featuring a reception/shop space, café, and toilet facilities with picturesque views of the coastline. The existing caravan park amenity block will also be upgraded to provide modern facilities for overnight guests.

Further developments include a bike park for older children and a refurbished adventure play park with inclusive and accessible features, ensuring fun for all. The project will also enhance path infrastructure and add a new maze viewing platform, improving accessibility across the park.

Alderman Gerardine Mulvenna, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, shared her enthusiasm: “We are thrilled to progress with the next stages of Carnfunnock Country Park’s redevelopment. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our plans so far and receive community feedback. The redevelopment will not only revitalise the park but will also make a significant impact on the local area.”

Carnfunnock Country Park is situated on the famous Antrim Coast Road (A2), approximately 3.5 miles north of Larne town and harbour, and over 20 miles from Belfast.
